Affordable Green Cars

It wasn’t that long ago that affordable green cars were simply a thought into the future.

Now, low-cost electric cars are becoming mainstream on America’s roads.

We rank the top five affordable electric cars to save you more money.

2020 Mini Cooper SE ($30,750)

EV range: 110 miles

When it comes to most vehicles, Mini features a higher price tag than most. But that’s not the case with the Mini Cooper SE. This EV is based on the Hardtop 2-Door model. It comes with plenty of style and helps to create a fun atmosphere.

With a 110-mile driving range, it doesn’t go quite as far as some others on our list, but this is enough for most urban commuters. Additionally, this vehicle is simple to park just about anywhere.

2020 Nissan Leaf ($32,535)

EV range: 150 miles

If you want a little more distance for just a little more cash, you might consider the Leaf. It offers 150 miles of driving range with the base trim, but you can upgrade to a model that offers 226 miles instead.

Additionally, customers find that this EV accelerates well while offering superior handling. However, the back seats don’t fold down, and there is limited storage space. It’s definitely not the best car for a huge Costco haul.

2020 Hyundai Ioniq Electric ($34,000)

EV range: 170 miles

In 2020, Hyundai offered the Ioniq Electric with a larger battery pack. This new design increases the range from 124 miles to 170 instead. The company also offers a Level 2 and Level 3 charging capability, which speeds up the charging time.

With this vehicle, you can expect superior acceleration and a big infotainment display, but it’s not all peaches and cream. In fact, the back seat is quite uncomfortable, so it might not be the best option if you carry occupants regularly.

2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV ($37,495)

EV range: 259 miles

If you want the best value when it comes to affordable green cars, you really can’t go wrong with the Bolt EV. This little commuter vehicle offers nimble handling and an exceptionally spacious cabin. For the 2020 model year, it even comes with a longer driving range than most.

However, you might not appreciate the low-dollar interior style. But, for some people, the driving range and capability is far more important than the interior features.

2020 Tesla Model 3 ($41,190)

EV range: 250 miles

On the luxury end of the spectrum, the Model 3 is a top choice among enthusiasts. It provides a long range, has tons of gadgetry, and even a few surprises, such as whoopee cushion sounds. Whether you want something to drive in the city or you have longer trips in mind, the Tesla EV won’t let you down.

It has a larger trunk than most, plus the additional front storage space for luggage or groceries. It’s also a fun car to drive with the composed handling, tight steering, and instant torque. With all of the aspects considered, it’s easy to see why the Model 3 would be one of the top electric cars to own on a budget.

Cost to Charge

While you will be able to cut your ties to gasoline, you will be responsible for the electricity expense of charging at home. Estimates project that charging a car with a cost of $0.11 per kWh means you could spend about $0.04 per mile.

Resale Value

You might have trouble getting the resale value you want out of your electric vehicle. Many customers prefer to buy new because of the credits and large leaps in technology. It becomes more difficult to sell a used electric vehicle than one might think.

Cost of Maintenance

One of the perks to maintaining an environmentally friendly car is the lower expenses. You won’t need to do oil changes and other related services anymore. However, there are some maintenance procedures that you will need to pay attention to.
